Got a subaru forester 2017. Had the same problem. Car battery is dead, manual key won't work nor unlock. Did some several research and watch on youtube. I sprayed WD40 on the key slot (A lot of it) cause they said maybe it was stuck and has some dirt, dust or rust inside.

All the button does is beep 3 times, no matter if it's open or closed. You can close it (slow and painful), and it'll latch. You can hold the button down long enough to unlatch it and slowly raise it. But the normal 'open' and 'close' mechanism... www.subaruoutback.org.
